dashi vs umami.
an umami alternative built around revenue.

the honest answer

umami is open source, cookieless and free to self-host, with a free cloud tier and deep product analytics. dashi is for founders who sell through stripe and want every sale traced to its channel, page and keyword, live on a 3D globe they leave open all day.

who should pick which

umami is great.
here's when.

pick umami if…

  • you want to own the code and the server. umami is MIT-licensed and runs on your own infrastructure.
  • you want no cookies and no consent banner. umami uses no cookies; dashi sets a first-party visitor cookie.
  • you need product analytics: journeys, retention and cohorts, plus session replays and heatmaps on its business plan.
  • you want an API and MCP access. umami has both from its pro plan.
  • a free hosted tier fits. umami's hobby plan covers 100K events a month for one website.

pick dashi if…

  • you sell through stripe. dashi reads sales and refunds with a read-only key; in umami, revenue comes from events you send with an amount and currency.
  • you want to know which google keywords make money. dashi pulls search console keywords and estimates what each one earned.
  • you want to watch visitors arrive. each one lands as a pin with their city, device, referrer and current page.
  • you'll leave it open: music, live weather, globe skins, and cha-ching on every sale.
  • you have more than one site. every site sits on one globe while dashi is in early access.

questions

can I self-host dashi?

no. dashi is a hosted service. if self-hosting is a must, umami (MIT) or plausible's community edition are good picks.

does dashi use cookies?

yes, one first-party visitor cookie (plus localStorage), so returning visits and stripe sales line up. it isn't cookieless. whether you need a consent banner depends on your site and where your visitors are.

how does dashi attribute stripe revenue?

paste a stripe restricted key (rk_…) and dashi reads your sales and refunds. to tie each sale to a channel, add the dashi visitor id to your checkout session's metadata. dashi writes the prompt for you to paste into cursor, lovable or bolt. each sale is credited to the buyer's first visit.

what does dashi cost?

nothing for now, while dashi is in early access. no card needed.
